Where Are Emotions Stored in the Body? (Signs, Locations & What to Notice)
Most people don’t realise they’re holding onto emotions in their body…
Until they start noticing the same tension,
in the same place,
over and over again.
A tight chest that shows up in certain situations
A knot in your stomach that won’t go away
Shoulders that feel constantly heavy
It’s easy to brush these off as “just stress”
But often, these are signs your body is holding onto something deeper.
Where Are Emotions Stored in the Body?
Trapped emotions aren’t stored in just one place.
They can be held anywhere in the body.
But in practice, certain areas tend to show consistent patterns - both physically and emotionally.
What matters most isn’t memorising these…
It’s starting to recognise what shows up in your body.
Common Areas Emotions Are Stored (And What You Might Notice)
Chest
You might notice:
Tightness or heaviness
A closed or guarded feeling
Emotional sensitivity in certain situations
Often connected to:
Grief
Heartbreak
Deep emotional pain
Metaphysically, this area relates to:
Love and connection
self worth
Joy (or lack of)
If something here feels restricted, it can sometimes reflect past hurt or hesitation to fully open up and let others in.
Stomach / Gut
You might notice:
A sinking feeling
“Butterflies” or uneasiness
Digestive discomfort during stress
Often connected to:
Anxiety
Fear
Nervousness
Metaphysically, this area relates to:
Safety and security
Being unable to physically “digest” something in life (situation, emotion, information etc)
Emotional processing
Which is why it reacts quickly when something doesn’t feel right - even before you consciously understand why.
Shoulders & Neck
You might notice:
Constant tension and tightness
Aches and pains
Feeling physically weighed down
Often connected to:
Stress
Pressure
Responsibility
This is where people often like they’re “taking on the weight of the world”, usually when they’re taking on more than they can realistically handle (whether that is physically, mentally or emotionally).
Jaw
You might notice:
Clenching (especially at night)
Tightness without realising
Teeth grinding
Often connected to:
Suppressed anger
Frustration
Holding things in
This tends to show up when something isn’t being expressed.
Lower Back
You might notice:
Ongoing tension or discomfort
Feeling unstable or unsupported
Often connected to:
Security
Stability
Support (including financial or life direction)
This is something that comes up quite often in sessions with clients.
Hips
You might notice:
Tightness or restriction
Resistance in movement or flexibility
Often connected to:
Moving forward in life
Change
Personal power
This area can reflect hesitation or resistance around change. Women in particular tend to store a lot of emotions around this area.
Throat
You might notice:
Tightness when trying to speak
A feeling of being “choked up”
Difficulty expressing yourself clearly
Often connected to:
Communication
Self-expression
Speaking your truth
This is especially common if you tend to hold things in or avoid difficult conversations.
The Deeper Meaning Behind These Patterns
Certain areas of the body have long been associated with specific emotional themes - something explored in work like Louise Hay’s teachings.
But this isn’t about assigning fixed meanings. In fact, there’s a common saying in holistic healing:
“anything can cause anything.”
Since every person is unique, it’s actually about noticing patterns in how your body responds.
Your body responds based on:
your unique experiences
your perceptions in the moment
what wasn’t fully processed
Which is why two people can go through similar situations, but store the emotional energy in completely different areas of the body.
How to Tell Where You’re Holding Emotions
You don’t need to analyse everything to figure this out.
Most of the time, your body is already showing you.
You just need to pay attention.
Look for patterns like:
The same area tightening in specific situations
A physical sensation that appears with certain emotions
Chronic tension that doesn’t fully go away
Your body reacting before your mind catches up
For example:
Tight chest → emotional situations
Gut discomfort → uncertainty or stress
Jaw clenching → holding things in
These patterns are often more revealing than the actual event itself.
If you want to understand why this happens in the first place, you can read more about it here.
Why Awareness Is Crucial
Simply becoming aware of where emotions show up in your body can start to shift things.
Because in the moment something happens, instead of:
pushing it down
ignoring it
or reacting automatically
You begin to notice:
“My chest is tightening right now”
“My stomach feels off”
“I’m clenching my jaw”
That awareness creates a small but powerful pause.
And in that pause, your body has a chance to process the emotion instead of storing it.
And that, is what prevents more trapped emotions from forming in the body.
How This Builds Emotional Intelligence (EQ)
This kind of awareness doesn’t just help with preventing trapped emotions - it actually builds your emotional intelligence over time.
You start to:
Recognise emotions earlier (before they build up)
Understand how your body responds to different situations
Respond more consciously instead of reacting automatically
Feel more in control of your emotional state
Instead of emotions feeling overwhelming or unpredictable, they become something you can notice, understand, and move through in the moment.
A Quick Note
If you want to understand how emotions get stored in the body,
you can read more about that here:
And if you’re new to this work, this explains the full concept:
How Emotions Are Released From the Body
Awareness is the first step.
But to fully clear what’s already being held, the easiest way is to work with the body (and the subconscious) directly.
This is what I do in Body Code sessions.
We identify:
what’s stored
where it’s stored (if necessary)
and gently release it
Without needing to relive everything or talk through every detail.
Final Thoughts
Your body isn’t random.
If something keeps showing up in the same place, there’s usually a reason.
Not something to overanalyse - but something to notice.
Because once you start paying attention, you begin to understand your body in a completely different way.
And from there, real change becomes a lot easier.
