What Are Inherited Trapped Emotions? When the Emotion Did Not Begin With You

You can carry an emotional pattern that did not begin with anything you personally experienced.

Within the Emotion Code, some trapped emotions are inherited through the family line. You may receive them from a parent who developed the emotion during their own life, or from an ancestor several generations back.

Once inherited, the emotion exists in your body like any other trapped emotion. It may influence how you feel, react and respond, even when you cannot find an event in your own past that explains the intensity of it.

Fear, grief, rejection, scarcity or helplessness can feel completely personal while originating long before you were born.

These are known as inherited trapped emotions.

What Is an Inherited Trapped Emotion?

A trapped emotion is emotional energy that became trapped in the body rather than being fully processed and released. It may form during a painful event, prolonged stress or an experience that overwhelms your ability to process what you are feeling at the time. Although the experience ends, the emotional energy may continue influencing your reactions, behaviours and physical or emotional wellbeing.

An inherited trapped emotion is no different from any other trapped emotion once it is in your body. The only difference is that it did not originate from an experience in your own life.

Just as you may inherit your parents’ eye colour, height or other biological traits, you can also inherit trapped emotional energy from them. Your mother or father may have developed the emotion during their lifetime, or they may have inherited it from an earlier ancestor before passing it to you at conception.

Inherited emotions can travel through multiple generations. In my sessions, I most commonly find that they originated within the previous one to three generations, although they can be traced much further back.

Research into intergenerational trauma is increasingly examining how the effects of severe stress and trauma may be carried biologically into later generations. Studies have identified differences in stress regulation and epigenetic markers among some descendants of trauma-exposed parents, while researchers continue investigating the roles of pregnancy, parental stress, family environment and changes in gene expression. A 2025 study involving three generations of Syrian refugees found an intergenerational epigenetic signature associated with exposure to violence, adding to evidence that the effects of trauma may reach beyond the person who directly experienced it.

Can You Feel an Emotion Without Knowing Where It Came From?

Because an inherited trapped emotion exists within your own body, it feels like yours.

You do not experience it as someone else’s grief or your great-grandmother’s fear. You simply feel grief, fear, rejection, shame, helplessness or another emotional charge.

Your conscious mind may then search your own life for a reason.

You might assume your anxiety is caused entirely by your current circumstances. You may analyse your childhood, your relationships or a recent event without finding anything that explains why the reaction is so intense.

This does not mean every unexplained emotion is inherited. Your own experiences can create trapped emotions even when you no longer remember the original event. However, your personal history is not the only place an emotional pattern can begin.

Within the Emotion Code, muscle testing is used to identify the emotion and determine whether it is your own, absorbed from someone else or inherited through your biological family line.

How Are Trapped Emotions Inherited?

According to the Emotion Code, an inherited trapped emotion is passed from parent to child at conception.

Your parent may have developed the trapped emotion during their own life, or they may have inherited it from one of their parents. The emotion can continue moving through the family until it is identified and released.

For example, your grandmother may have developed a trapped emotion of fear during a period of financial instability. Your mother may have inherited that emotional energy from her, then passed it to you.

You do not need to have experienced poverty yourself. You may still carry a disproportionate fear response around money because the emotional energy entered your system before you were born.

The same principle could apply to grief, abandonment, rejection, hopelessness, shame, vulnerability or any other trapped emotion.

You may know the family event that created it, but most likely you will not. You do not need a complete understanding of your family history to release the emotion.

What Happens to the Family When an Inherited Emotion Is Released?

One of the most interesting aspects of inherited trapped emotions is that the release not only affects the person receiving the session.

Releasing an inherited trapped emotion releases that same energy from the family members who inherited or still carry it.

Imagine that you inherited a trapped emotion from your mother and your sibling inherited it as well. When the emotion is identified and released through you, it is usually also be released from your mother and sibling.

The same applies to your children who may have received the emotion through you.

This creates the possibility of helping people within your family without working with each person individually. They do not need to attend the session, know which emotion was found or consciously participate in the release.

This does not mean every emotional difficulty in the family disappears. Each person may have other trapped emotions, beliefs, experiences and imbalances contributing to their own concerns. The release relates to the specific inherited emotional energy that was identified.

A Client’s Nail-Biting Stopped, Then Her Son’s Did Too

I saw a striking example of this while working with a client who I worked with over several months.

During our work together, we released trapped emotional energy contributing to various things, but never directly to the habit of biting her nails. Over these sessions, some of what appeared was inherited, which meant the same emotional energy was also carried by other members of her family.

Her nail-biting stopped completely without her having to consciously resist the urge or force herself to change the behaviour.

What made the result even more interesting was what happened with her son.

We had never worked directly on him. He was not part of any session and no separate work was completed for his nail-biting. However, his habit also stopped completely.

It is likely that he had inherited some of the same trapped emotional energy through his mother. When it was released from her family line, it was also released from him.

Neither of them had to use discipline, reminders or behaviour-management techniques to stop. The emotional pull behind the habit was no longer there.

This was one client’s Body Code result, and results naturally vary. However, it demonstrates how an inherited emotional imbalance may appear across a family even when only one person receives the session.

Are Inherited Emotions the Same as Family Conditioning?

Inherited trapped emotions are not the same as learning a pattern from your family.

You can adopt beliefs, habits and emotional responses by observing the people around you. A child who repeatedly hears that money is difficult may develop a subconscious belief that financial security is impossible. Someone raised in a family that avoids conflict may learn to suppress anger or remain silent when something is wrong.

These are forms of family conditioning.

An inherited trapped emotion does not need to be taught or demonstrated. You may inherit it even if you never met the ancestor who experienced the original event.

Both can exist at the same time. You may inherit an emotion of fear and also develop beliefs or behaviours that reinforce it.

Beliefs themselves can also be inherited within the Belief Code. You can read more about how subconscious belief systems form and affect your life in this article.

Do You Need to Know Which Ancestor It Came From?

No. You do not need to investigate your family tree or discover exactly what happened generations ago.

Muscle testing is used to determine whether an emotion was inherited and which side of the family it came through. The testing may also identify the generation where the emotion originated if that information is required for the release.

Sometimes the result immediately makes sense based on what you know about your family. In other cases, there is no known history that explains it.

The release does not depend on finding evidence of the original event. You are working with the emotional energy currently showing in your body, not attempting to reconstruct another person’s life.

You also do not need to relive the ancestor’s experience or consciously feel the emotion before it can be released.

How I Address Inherited Trapped Emotions in Body Code Sessions

Inherited trapped emotions can be identified and released as part of my remote Body Code sessions.

The Body Code encompasses the Emotion Code and may also lead into the Belief Code when beliefs are relevant to the issue being addressed. I do not begin by deciding that your concern must come from an inherited emotion, belief or experience from your past.

You bring the symptom, habit, emotional reaction or area of your life that you want to work on. I use proxy muscle testing to follow your subconscious and identify what your body is ready to release.

An inherited trapped emotion may appear as part of that process, but it is not assumed or searched for simply because a pattern also exists elsewhere in your family.

The same symptom can have a completely different source in two people. Nail-biting may be linked to inherited emotional energy for one person, while another person’s habit may involve emotions formed during their own life, subconscious beliefs or other Body Code imbalances.

The testing determines what is relevant to you.

Could an Emotional Pattern in Your Family End With You?

You may have spent years assuming a powerful emotional response was simply part of your personality.

Perhaps everyone in your family worries about money. Maybe rejection affects several generations with the same intensity. You may notice the same fears, habits or emotional reactions appearing in your children without understanding how they developed.

Shared family patterns do not always come from inherited trapped emotions. Some are learned, some arise from similar circumstances and others have different causes in each person.

However, it is possible that part of what you are carrying began before you were born.

Releasing an inherited trapped emotion does not require you to uncover every family secret, analyse your ancestors or convince anyone else to participate. You can work through your own body and potentially release the same emotional energy from others who inherited it.

Sometimes the person who chooses to address the pattern is the person through whom it finally ends.
